Toradora! Character Song Album CD Review

toradora-character-song-album

With the anime done and dusted with just over a month ago, the original light novels coming to an end with 10 volumes finishing a few weeks before the last episode of the anime adaptation, and the visual novel game for the PSP, Toradora P! (P stands for Portable) released a week ago on 30th April.

The highly awaited Character Song Album as come to the surface!

Just like the Hayate no Gotoku! Character Cover CD I reviewed… two months ago, is a album where various characters from the anime (their seiyuu to be exact) which in this case, sing original songs. (as in the HnG Cover CD used other hit and legendary OP/ED/OSTs to keep up with their parody theme)

The album also includes the FULL version of the Christmas ED in episode 19 of the anime! (still dunno why they showed a christmas themed episode in March…must be around the time when the episode was being produced…lol)

The album stars Ryuuji, Taiga, Kitamura, Minorin, Ami, Yasuko and Yuri, and a few duets and group acts. What I think would’ve been nice was that they could’ve thrown in more of the supporting characters like Haruta, Noto, Kihara and Nanako, or even pair them up and duets! But thats just my opinion.

So as the list goes:

01 “Frascoration” sung by Kawashima Ami, Kushieda Minorin and Aisaka Taiga (Eri Kitamura, Yui Horie and Rie Kugimiya)

To simply put, this is the “other” version of the 1st OP since I have this feeling that the style of this song is the same as the first OPs. Well nice group act with the heroine trio and nice rhythm. 7.5/10

02 “Ore ni Dekiru Koto” sung by Junji Majima (Takasu Ryuuji)

First time heard Ryuuji singing, it kinda has a nostalgic feeling to it…
I actually like this song, it has this nice ring to the song and being it from a male seiyuu whos been commonly voiced in supporting roles in various animes and games and not really appeared in singing any OP/ED/ect. he’s actually a great singer. 9/10

03 “I MY” sung by Aisaka Taiga (Rie Kugimiya)

At the beginning of the song, I think I’ve heard that same filter to that of Avril Lavigne… Well this song is one of them girly rock songs in my opinion but despite being a guy, this songs alright for mostly anybody. 8.5/10

04 “TANPOPO” sung by Koigakuro Yuri (Rie Tanaka)

Seems like another girly rock song with frequent use of the electric guitar being played in the background, but being from Rie Tanaka, seiyuu and singer who sung most anime OP/ED/OSTs including Chobits, SEED, Hayate =D, and Azumanga Daioh, which are mostly pop songs, she’s not that bad at rock too =) 6.5/10

05 “Shitsuren Samba” sung by Kitamura Yuusaku (Hirofumi Nojima)

Three words. Oh. My. Gawd. In my opinion this is my most favorite song in this whole album, definitely fits in with Kitamura in a way, the hysterical laughing between verses, the catchy chorus melody, the retained original voice, awesome. 10/10

06 “Full Swing” sung by Kushieda Minorin (Yui Horie)

Same as Taiga’s song, a girly rock themed song, being from Yui Horie, who singed the 2nd OP and the 1st ED, she’s still awesome in this one too. With the occasional “Wa-ha-ha” heard in-between the lyrics it fits in with her uppy personality~ 9/10

07 “Yes!” sung by Kawashima Ami (Eri Kitamura)

I have a feeling this has a kinda weird Ayumi Hamasaki style in it, or maybe its the BGM… It has this night out feeling that feels great and a good song to listen when you’re feeling depressed…hehe 9.5/10

08 “Mirano Tengoku” sung by Takasu Yasuko (Sayaka Oohara)

This feels like what Yasuko sings when she is off doing her job at the Hostess bar since it has this mature, clichéd, casino (don’t blame on the weird descriptions xD) style and rhythm in it. Overall its pretty good and the song really fits her in some unknown way. 8/10

09 “Holy Night” sung by Aisaka Taiga and Kawashima Ami (Rie Kugimiya and Eri Kitamura)

This is the full ED of Episode 19 and the song Taiga and Ami sung at the Christmas Eve Party in the episode, nice christmassy feeling with the bells and tinkly sounds in the background. This could be considered as a Christmas Carols if you think about it xD 9.5/10

10 “Pre-Parade -postparade mix-“ sung by Kawashima Ami, Kushieda Minorin and Aisaka Taiga (Eri Kitamura, Yui Horie and Rie Kugimiya)

The remixed or as in this case “postparade mix” version of the first OP of te anime, now I’m not really keen on remixes after listening to like hundreds of remixes of Zettai Karen Childrens 1st OP “Over the Future”, about 1 or 2 should be enough. Putting that aside, they did a good job with this remix with making it a rock theme with the lead electric guitar and the techno filters and beeps. 7.5/10

11 “Orange -citrus mix-“ sung by Kawashima Ami, Kushieda Minorin and Aisaka Taiga (Eri Kitamura, Yui Horie and Rie Kugimiya)

The remix/citrus mix version of the 2nd ED of the anime, same as the “Pre Parade -postparade mix-” I’m not really keen on remixes when I usually think the original is fine as it is, but same as the last one, this one is pretty good too. It has this dramatic/dark/sad theme to it with the dense piano and rock guitar in the background, I think they should have use this as the ED of episode 21 when Taiga “unconsciously” confesses that she can’t stop loving Ryuuji =D. 7/10

So that’s really about it, there are also pretty visuals in the booklet showing all the legal stuff, credits and even lyrics to the songs featured and images of the characters shown in the anime.

So until then~!

I liked the Orange-citrus mix. Probably only song on the album I like, actually. It had a really nice blend of jazzy piano, electric guitar, and strings. While I’ll agree with you on the song feeling dramatic with the instrumentals and lyrics, the song felt uplifting in a weird way to me. It pumps me with positive energy, sort of like a everything’s going to be alright way.

Pre-parade post-parade mix just sounded way too busy and discordant for my liking. While most of the other songs for the most part were meh for me. Holy night was decent, but I’m not much of a christmas kind of guy.
