After many months of waiting and waiting, the wait is finally over. Yea’ that’s right, Shakugan no Shana is BACK! With an 4-part OVA known as “Shakugan no Shana S” this time based off the spin-off light novel series of the same name. And believe me, this episode contains mild soft gender bender.
Wuwaow. I actually can’t believe it… Shana is back with new episodes. But first of all, like I do with many other 1st episode summaries is to go over the opening and ending sequences. No speculation as to whether the OP/ED will change or receive new sequences in the next volume but we can be safe to assure it’ll be Mami Kawada and KOTOKO performing the songs like in previous sequences.
A particular part in the opening I would like to point out;
Whether or not this the younger version of Shana (I strongly believe that’s Shana) is not really known at the moment (if anyone has read the novel, then yeah). Also she vaguely looks like Azusa from K-ON! in a scene later on in the sequence.
The song in general sounded pretty good, the animation as well, fitting really well in sync with the song. Also like the fact that Shana (and her loli lolier form) only starred in the sequence.
The ending on the other hand…
Again performed by Mami Kawada, and again the song is really good. Just like any other conventional ending sequences it just some petty slide show with some zoom video effect pulled through. The ending (+animation) will most likely be changed in the second episode as this ending sequence is more particularly focused on the aspects of this first episode. So doubtless the ED will change next time.
Moving on, the plot of this episode! Well… this episode was pretty much an episodic really. And I highly predict that the remaining three episodes will be episodics too, as this episode lacks the many links that would tie in with the main series. So pretty much really, this is just a spin-off side story in parallel to the main series. But overall this really was an awesome butt-kicking episode if you ask me.
What also caught my eye in this ep…
ZOMGZ! SHANA A BEARER OF THE SHIMAPAN LEGACY!!! IMMD!!!
Thus the title combination “Shana-pan” I came up with in the title post.
The voice cast on the other hand, the voicing duo Rie Kugumiya and Satoshi Hino return to voice the main characters (you know who I’m talking about) and the rest, well, the original cast really with their updated voices (it has been a year and all and the actors are human…). But most of all what really made me suspicious is that Kugumiya’s trademark tsundere voicing in this OVA seems to had deteriorated 5 minutes into the episode. Whether it’s because Yuuji was in Shana’s body at the time so his (or her) voice would’ve changed a bit or it’s Kugumiya at fault, I can’ really tell. But all in all, nice to see the original cast return, and also alive and well.
On a totally different note, I’ve been reading on several forums, blog posts and shabby Youtube videos that there are many speculations of Shana and Yuuji finally going to kiss in the OVA series, even though there were many chances of it happening in the main series. Well, at that time I had many doubts of this happening, and coming up with a theory that even if this would happen, they would both get interrupted by someone or something, like many romantic comedies do. And in the end, I was right.
Insert Yuuji’s mum’s interruption here…
Shana (in Yuuji’s body) actually made a true statement there.
On a bright Sunday afternoon, Shana and Yuuji are in that tall tower (forgot its exact name but seen numerous times in the main series) going through a large pile of the junk, looking for something which I didn’t really know. Yuuji then finds a mysterious black telescope, just as when he looks at Shana through the telescope, both Shana’s and Yuuji’s minds switched bodies! Which Alastair later points out that its called “Reshuffle”, where the user and the individual the user points the telescope to can be able to switch their minds around, and that this situation can be solved just by looking through the telescope again. Alastair tells both Shana and Yuuji to not let anyone know of this, the reason is not yet known. But just they where about to do so, Keisaku and Eita stops by to see what they were doing. Trying to cover up the truth, Shana and Yuuji attempt to act like one another, ending with terrible results. So throughout the day, the two head out to find somewhere large and spacious, where at the same time peaceful and uninterrupted since Wilhelmina and Margery will come flying as they are constantly monitoring the Power of Existence.
Blablabla Shana and Yuuji try many places (ie. Karaoke Booths and School) but always get bumped into anyone they know close, for example, their Margery, classmates and Wilhemina (which Shana (Yuuji) shouts out that she loves her in public as a distraction to get away, which then I lol’d). Shana then suggests they go back to Yuuji’s house and look for the telescope there. As they get back home, Yuuji (in Shana’s body) witnesses Shana (in Yuuji’s body) wobbling on her feet. This suspicion strengthens as when Yuuji (in Shana’s body) heads up stairs he sees Shana kneeling on the floor, looking like she’s suffering pain. Increasingly panicking, Yuuji decides to open up the Yogasa to quickly find the hougu to return things back to normal. But just after he did, the large piles of junk falls on top and surrounds the two. As Shana (in Yuuji’s body) wakes up, she wounded up on top of Yuuji (in Shana’s body) after ducking from the falling junk. Silently gazing at Yuuji (in Shana’s body) thinking that it was a good time while Yuuji is still passed out Shana decides to kiss him. Moments before the kiss, Yuuji’s mum calls on the two asking what the loud crash was. Shana reluctantly cancels the kiss (thinking it wouldn’t be right if they weren’t in their proper bodies) and calls forth a Fuzetsu.
As Yuuji wakes up, Shana quickly gets the telescope and aims at Yuuji, restoring Shana and Yuuji’s mind back to their original bodies. Moments after getting their bodies back, Yuuji feels a sudden stomach ache and runs to the restroom. Turning out that it was all the ice cream Shana ate for him earlier on, not that the telescope had some sort of protection against Flame Hazes. The reason why Alistair said that they mustn’t let anyone know of this (especially Margery and Wilhelmina) is because the Reshuffle’s effect will not work if there is a “wall” in between the two user’s relationship. Meaning the reason why Alistair said not to let anyone know was to protect Shana’s true feelings towards Yuuji.
-end of summary-
Last but not lease, enjoy the selection of screen shots I took below;
Ooh can’t wait for the second episode coming out next month or two (release date of the 2nd Volume as of now not confirmed), even though there wasn’t really a preview of the second episode. I can be safe to assure its going to be as awesome as this episode.
I end my post.
